Pearl Jewelry - The Story of Pearl Hunters

As long as pearl jewelry have been known to people, they have been a highly sought commodity for their beauty. It's only in recent times however that the industry has taken the hunt for the perfect pearl to a whole different level. Today, the shiny orbs that we see on in display in jewelry stores have actually almost always been grown in farms.

That's a far cry from the dangerous extraction and collection methods used before the invention of modern technology. In the past, not more than 100 years ago, the only way to retrieve pearls was by diving in lakes, floods and the ocean to pick them up, one at the time. The unfortunate divers who'se job it was to do this, were often poor and lured by the relative large sums they could get. The diver would sometimes have to dive as deep as 100 feet on one single breath of air. In order to preserve air and to stay submerged the longest, the divers would hold on to heavy stones on the way down.

Naturally, this dangerous activity was reserved for the desperate or the powerless - in many cases slaves or extremely poor peasents. Today, this method is all but obsolete in most places of the world. The cheaper cultured pearls have become popular and are many times the only pearls available to the consumer.

There are however still a few isolated areas that practice this old art of pearl diving. Some of the finest natural pearl speciments come from the gulf of Bahrain. Here, divers still risk their health to retrieve what are considered the top of the crop in the world. In fact, Bahrain wants no part of the sale of cultured pearls, banned from trade. Bahrain is one of the few places on earth that does an active job in trying to preserve the natural habitat and waters from pollution.

It's an interesting story and one that continues to fascinate buyers around the world. Somehow, the beauty of the pearl grows when it's been retrieved from the depth of the ocean.

Buying Pearl Jewelry Without Being Ripped Off

Buying pearl jewelry can be fun, exciting and confusing. Whether you're considering a gift of pearl jewelry for someone special or as a treat for yourself, take some time to learn the terms used in the industry. Here's some information to help you get the best quality pearl jewelry for your money, whether you're shopping in a traditional brick and mortar store or online.

Pearls

Natural or real pearls are made by oysters and other mollusks. Cultured pearls also are grown by mollusks, but with human intervention; that is, an irritant introduced into the shells causes a pearl to grow. Imitation pearls are man-made with glass, plastic, or organic materials.

Because natural pearls are very rare, most pearls used in jewelry are either cultured or imitation pearls. Cultured pearls, because they are made by oysters or mollusks, usually are more expensive than imitation pears. A cultured pearl's value is largely based on its size, usually stated in millimeters, and the quality of its nacre coating, which give it luster. Jewelers should tell your if the pearls are cultured or imitation. Some black, bronze, gold, purple, blue and orange pearls, whether natural or cultured, occur that way in nature; some, however, are dyed through various processes. Jewelers should tell you whether the colored pearls are naturally colored, dyed or irradiated.

Clams, oysters, mussels and many other mollusks with limy shells are known to produce pearls. But very few kinds yield gem pearls of jeweler's quality. The pearl is an abnormal growth of mother-of-pearl, or nacre, imbedded in the soft bodies of these shellfish. It is built up, layer upon layer, in the same way as nacre is added to the lining of the growing shell and always has the same color and luster. For example, over the country, hundreds of good-sized pearls are found each year in the oysters we eat. Unfortunately these have no commercial value regardless of whether they have been cooked or not because they are dull opaque white or purple like the shell of the parent oyster. In recent times almost all pearls of gem quality come from the oriental pearl oyster which has a bright shimmering translucent nacre.

A pearl starts growing when some irritating foreign substance such as a sand grain, bit of mud, parasite or other object becomes lodged in the shell-producing gland called the mantle. Pearls formed in the soft flesh where nacre can be added on all sides are most likely to be spherical and the most highly prized. By far the great majority are flattened or variously distorted and have little value. Size, color, luster and freedom from flaws are other essential qualities. Unlike other gems, such as diamonds, pearls have an average life of only about 50 years. In time the small amount of water in a pearl's make-up is lost and its surface cracks. Because they are mostly lime, necklaces which are worn often are injured by the acid secretions of the human skin.

All you have to cultured pearl jewelry do is to pick one or two motifs that you can incorporate throughout your wedding scheme.

A great place to start is with the famous Maine lobster. This makes a great motif that you can use in many ways. To set the tone, choose wedding invitations with lobsters on them. For an informal wedding, you could use stationary with a large red lobster; if your style is more formal, then an understated gold engraved lobster would be nice on the top of the invitation.

turquoise jewelry

Who says that your wedding centerpieces have to be white flowers in a simple round vase? The idea that you have to turquoise jewelry do any element in a traditional way is totally out the window for weddings today. To really create a unique look, think about replacing the basic floral centerpiece with something a bit less typical.

What sort of atmosphere do you really love? Is is a funky nightclub, or an elegant supper club, or perhaps a relaxing spa? Whatever your favorite time or place, you can use it as inspiration for your wedding. This is a silver pearl jewelry great way to personalize your wedding and to make it distinctive.

For brides and grooms who love the disco era, instead of a floral centerpiece, try a disco ball. You can either put it on a stand on the table, or suspend it from the ceiling over each table, with candles on the table to cultured pearl jewelry cast light onto the silvery ball. If you have always dreamed of recreating a moment from "Saturday Night Fever" for your first dance, then this idea is for you!

Perhaps there is a little bistro or supper club that is near and dear to your heart. It could be your favorite date spot, or maybe where your fiance proposed to you, or both. Capture the intimate, warm feeling of loose freshwater pearl a bistro by using smaller tables, and topping each one with a tiny lamp instead of flowers. If you like the idea of having a few flowers on the tables, slip one into the napkin at each place setting. This can also be a fun do-it-yourself wedding project. Get lamps with basic white or ivory lampshades, and trim them out yourself. For a bride who is wearing pearl bridal jewelry, decorate the shades by adding a pearl trim to tie in with your bridal jewelry. Or you can use a fancy braided trim in your wedding colors for a splash of color on the lamps. If you are feeling a little wild, you can even consider trimming out the lampshades with maribou feathers!

For the bride and groom who love nature, there are all sorts of intriguing alternatives to traditional centerpieces. October brides can decorate their tables with a ribbon wrapped bundle of wheat. It is very simple, but at the loose akoya pearl same time has strong visual interest. A tall glass cylinder filled with seasonal fruits would be another wonderful natural centerpiece idea.

Think about your interests; if you and your future husband love to travel, an around the world theme would make for some interesting centerpieces. Miniature hot air balloons could make very charming accents when used in lieu of flowers. For fun, have some ivy or other greens trailing out of the basket of the hot air balloon.

Literary types, such as professors, could try out something even more offbeat for centerpieces: a stack of books. Choose beautiful old leather bound editions collected from used book shops, and artfully stack them in the center of each table. To make it festive, you can tie a wide satin or grosgrain ribbon around the whole stack, with a large bow at the top. Definitely seek out classic books about love or romance, like Jane Eyre or Emma. Your guests will have a great time discussing the books on their table - it is a centerpiece sure to spark some lively conversation.

Your wedding is your day to make a statement. Instead of doing what is expected, it can be a lot more fun to come up with something unique that says something about you as a couple. Designing your own centerpieces is a fantastic way to make your wedding even more special.

One of the most polished accessories that a bride can wear is a pair of gloves. There was a day that no proper young lady would think of being married without them on her hands. Nowadays, wedding gloves are not only timeless and nostalgic, they can also be cutting edge and very trendy.

Traditionally, a bride wore a pair of gloves based on the sleeve length of her gown, and in fact, this is still the best place to opera or rope necklace start with choosing your gloves. It is a pretty straightforward formula: the more bare arm the gown exposes, the longer they should be. This can be a nice way to make a strapless or sexier sheath gown more demure during the marriage ceremony. The gloves can then be removed for the reception for a new and different look.

The style of the glove should complement the tone of your bridal ensemble. If you are wearing a classic ballgown with lace applique and pearl bridal jewelry, you would want to choose some made from either cotton or kidskin. For a sweet vintage look, consider little short gloves that are trimmed with a tiny pearl border to match your bridal jewelry. Another possibility is a pair of freshwater pearl necklace lace gauntlets created from the same lace as the appliques on your gown.

Another wonderful option for formal weddings is a long pair of silk gloves. If you are wearing a strapless gown, opera length looks especially impressive. Of course, you must consider the length of your arms when choosing your gloves, so more petite brides will want to wear an over-the-elbow length rather than the ultra-long opera length style. Brides who are self-conscious about drawing attention to their upper arms may prefer to wear gloves that come to freshwater pearl bracelet just under the elbow.

Wedding gloves are not only traditional; they are also very much of-the-moment. At the most recent Oscar de la Renta bridal collection, he showed them in all shapes and sizes with the wedding dresses. There were long ones with slender dresses, short ones with ballgowns, slouchy gloves with ruffled dresses, and even baby blue gloves. Imagine how pretty a pair of pale blue gloves could be as your "something blue".

Another option for making a statement with gloves is to wear a color that has a strong contrast against a white gown, such as black. For the freshwater pearl pendant last few years, designers have been showing gowns and accessories with black accents, and this is one way to explore that concept. Embellishments can also be added to a pair of bridal gloves to express your personal style. Some options include crystals, rhinestone buttons, and delicate lace details.

Gloves can be a simple way to add some flair to your wedding ensemble. One other fun thing about them: there is an old custom that the bride should never see herself fully done up on her wedding day. To this end, many brides will leave off one glove until after they take a final peek in the mirror. That is just one more of the wonderful traditions involving wedding gloves.

Laura helps brides with their wedding plans by offering advice on selecting bridesmaids gifts, reception ideas and other aspects of planning a wedding. Pearl bridal jewelry can be classic and timeless or fresh and modern, depending on your style.

cheap pearl jewelry

If you have been shopping for a wedding gown, you have probably noticed announcements for upcoming bridal trunk shows at the cheap pearl jewelry local bridal salon. Many brides, however, are not quite sure what a trunk show really is, or why they would want to attend one. For the answers, read on...

In a nutshell, a bridal trunk show is a traveling collection of wedding gowns. The group of dresses will go from one salon to pearl beads the next, eventually traveling the entire country. The trunk show is usually in a particular salon for one weekend, which means that if you want to see it, it is important to book your appointment early.

Trunk shows are very exciting events for several reasons. First of all, the gowns included will be the newest styles from the designer. This means that you may have the chance to try on dresses that are not otherwise available in stores yet. Oftentimes, the sample in the trunk show is the only one in existence of pearl strands its kind. This makes a trunk show the perfect opportunity to find a dress that will be unique, instead of ending up with the same style as half of the brides in town.

Also included in a trunk show will be some of the designer's favorite or best selling styles. What is hot will vary from one part of the country to the next, so your local salon may not carry all of these samples in their usual collection. Regional styles definitely vary. For instance, a bridal salon in Dallas will carry very different dresses from the same designer as one in Boston. This means that if you are looking for a simple dress in Dallas, or a big fancy one in Boston, the wish pearl jewelry trunk show could be your chance to find that special dress.

Another thing that can be nice about trunk shows is that they can give a bridal store a chance to gauge response to a designer that is new to them. The stores will bring in a trunk show from a gown designer that they do not currently carry to see if their brides like them. So you might get to see gowns from a designer who is not normally available in your local market.

There are some other things that make trunk shows a lot of fun. Often a representative from the company will come with the gowns, and occasionally, the designer herself might make an appearance. Having someone from the company right there means that if you have any questions or special requests, you can get them answered on the spot. Who doesn't love instant gratification?

Sometimes the designer's rep will be willing to throw in extras at no additional charge. Many times pattern changes that would usually incur a hefty surcharge, such as longer trains or neckline re-designs, will be done for free as a trunk show special.

The bridal salon may also give you something extra if you order a gown during a trunk show. What that may be will depend on the particular salon. One common thing is for a bridal store to offer a 10% discount on gowns ordered during the trunk show. If you think about it, 10% off of a designer gown would be quite a big savings. If you were purchasing a $3500 dress, wouldn't it be great to save $350? With the money you save, you could buy something special for your attendants, like pearl bridesmaid jewelry. If you save enough on the gown, you could even get a whole set of pearl jewelry for each bridesmaid, and really make them feel appreciated.

Trunk shows are really fun events for brides who are looking for that perfect gown. They are a great opportunity to see unique styles, talk to someone from the company, and maybe even get a discount as well. Trunk shows do move on quickly, though, so when you go, if you find your dream dress, be prepared to order it on the spot or you might never see it again

CPIB officer cleared

A SENIOR anti-graft officer has been acquitted on charges of injuring a suspect he was interviewing last year. The prosecution had failed to prove that Mr Neo Siong Leng, 33, had intended to hurt Chinese national Lin Yanmei, 41, while interrogating her, said District Judge Ch'ng Lye Beng on Monday.

Ms Lin's testimony was also of little help shell pearl jewelry in determining whether the officer of the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) had set out to hurt her on Jan 14 last year, he added.

Mr Neo had been accused of flinging a plastic file at Ms Lin during the interview in his office, causing a 2cm-long cut on her lip. He was also accused of hurting her knee when he kicked a table, which hit her leg.

She was then being investigated for entering into shell pearl necklace a marriage of convenience with a Singaporean man.

Mr Neo denied throwing the file or kicking the table. He explained that on that day, he had been wearing his father's shoes, which were too big. As he kicked her marriage certificate on the floor away from her so as to pick it up, a shoe flew off his foot and hit her in the mouth.

He even showed the court how the shoe shell pearl earrings could have gone flying.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Samuel Chua said Mr Neo was hoping to extract a confession from Ms Lin, but when she did not cooperate, he became frustrated.

But Mr Neo's lawyers Subhas Anandan and Sunil Sudheesan pointed out that Ms Lin was inconsistent in her testimony - she had first demonstrated a downward hitting motion, then changed to a sideways smack, and lastly, to a throwing motion. The officers who took her to hospital also testified that she was unsure what had hit her.

To the prosecution's argument that Ms loose shell pearl Lin's DNA had been found on the file but not on the shoe, the court was told that the police did not seize the shoe until three weeks later, and sent it for lab tests only five months later, which could explain the lack of evidence on it.

On Monday, a clearly relieved Mr Neo thanked his shell pearl beads lawyers. The CPIB officer, suspended from duties on half pay since November, said he was looking forward to returning to work.

Man sues lawyer

A BUSINESSMAN who lost his investment in a property deal has sued the lawyer involved in the deal to get back $850,000. Mr Satinder Singh Garcha said he was talked into investing $1 million and found after a week that only $50,000 was left.

In the lawsuit, which opened in the shell pearl beads High Court on Monday, he alleged that the lawyer in question, Mr Uthayasurian Sidambaram, was instrumental in the loss of that money. He claimed that Mr Uthayasurian was grossly negligent and had failed to advise him of the conflicts of interest in the case.

The lawyer, who had 18 years' experience, was suspended from practising for a year by a Court of Three Judges in May, in disciplinary proceedings over the same case.

In its written judgment, the court warned lawyers to shell pearl earrings avoid the pitfalls of situations in which they represent multiple clients in the same case. Mr Uthayasurian had acted for multiple parties involved in a project to build on a plot of land in Tanglin Hill owned by the Brunei government.

Mr Singh not only put in the money in May 2006, but also authorised an undischarged bankrupt, Mr Louis Ang, to disburse the funds. A week later, he found that most of the money had gone to other parts of the project and legal costs.

Mr Singh complained to the Law Society and shell pearl strand also started a civil suit against Mr Uthayasurian to get back his investment. The lawyer, who was paid legal fees of $100,000 out of the investment, has refunded the payment made to him, but Mr Singh wants the rest of his money back.

He claims that Mr Uthayasurian did not alert him to Mr Ang's status as a bankrupt, nor advise him about the risks of giving a bankrupt unfettered authority to handle money. He contended that Mr Uthayasurian transferred the money on Mr Ang's instructions without telling him.

In fact, he claims that the lawyer was involved in a conspiracy with Mr Ang to defraud him of the money.

Mr Uthayasurian denies he and Mr Ang were in collusion to defraud Mr Singh, as they had separate roles in the project. He said Mr Singh was a seasoned businessman who was probably more aware of the risks of getting into such a project than he was.

The lawyer also disputes Mr Singh's claim that he was unaware of Mr Ang's status. He asserts that Mr Singh contributed to his own loss by choosing to authorise Mr Ang to disburse the money despite knowing he was bankrupt. Mr Singh is represented by Mr Andre Maniam, while Mr Uthayasurian is represented by Mr N. Sreenivasan.
